18 avril

Today was a quiet day, I worked all day on the project. Here are two wide angle pictures of PAP taken on my way back home.

Wide angle view of PAP

While I was taking these shots, a man walked to me and introduced himself as an intellectual. He told me he studied theology and was unemployed. We first talked about Haiti and then he asked where I was from. I told him I was from Canada, more precisely from Quebec. He then asked if I was a Christian. I told him I was but did not believe too much. He was shocked. He showed me the bible he held in his left hand. He mentioned I should believe in God and explained our meeting meant something, that it was God’s will. He then asked me my name. I answered Pierre. Your name is one of Jesus apostle, and his favorite one he responded ! Again, he told me it meant something and I should really start believing in God. He was probably a missionary or a preacher.

This meeting was interesting and made me reflect on my way home. I believe everyone as the right to believe in what he wants. Haiti, like most of the relatively poor countries in Central and South America, is a strong catholic stronghold. Haitians believe in God and I don’t blame them. With what happened in past decades; natural disasters; an unemployment rate of more than 80%; widespread poverty; you need to believe in something to give a sense to your life and God is the answer for most of them.

I add another shot to show you what it looks like from the sea.
